Who doesn’t like to do a little window shopping? If your window shopping habit involves looking at homes, the housing market and keeping up with what’s new and good in our community or you are considering urban living yourself you may want to visit CiTiRAMA 2012 being held in Northside, again this year.
I don’t venture to Northside often enough; when I do I alway enjoy the quaint up and coming city neighborhood experience. With it’s unique mix of shops, eateries and coffee shops Northside has emerged as one of the cities coolest neighborhoods.
September 8-16 Virginia Place will be featured in CiTiRAMA 2012. The homes range from $200,000 to $300,000. My husband had the opportunity to walk through several of the homes and has come home talking about them on more than one occasion. These homes are also eligible for the City of Cincinnati community development tax abatement incentives.
Candidly, I didn’t know what the Northside community had gone through to avoid a transportation plan to build a connector through their neighborhood. The leaders of that community had a dream of housing and green spaces that serve as a gateway to the neighborhood. Fortunately, they also had the tenacity that lasted decades to realize their dream.
I love the many ways CiTiRAMA engaged the community leading up to the show. They partnered with Blueprint for Success, a program founded in 2005 and “aims to assist participants (ages 18-24) in obtaining a promising livelihood in the field of construction through intensive educational and vocational training based on state and industry standards.” Additionally, the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati sponsored a contest to design the official poster for the CiTiRAMA home showcase. This year’s winner is Jordan Umerley, a student at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. CiTiRAMA 2012 also included a Designers’ Challenge where the interior designers for each home were asked to decorate a room for under $2500.

The one feature I couldn’t live without is a step-free entry; otherwise I couldn’t even get into the home…and neither could my aunt.
Did you notice that two of the three houses left over from the previous development had ramps attached to their front porches? If the houses are built with step-free entries you don’t even notice – it looks like a normal walkway to a normal porch. But, if they’re added on later they look horrible.
Even if you don’t think you need/want a step-free entry, think about your neighborhood’s future property values if they don’t start building step-free entries as they build the houses.
In less than eight years 22.7% of Hamilton County is expected to be 60+ years old… add that to the current 7% that already have a mobility disability. This means that more and more houses will be attaching ramps. What happens to the property value of a development with a bunch of houses that add ramps later, compaired with the property values of a development that built step-free entries as they built the houses?

I couldn’t live without my washer and dryer. I can’t abide laundromats. And my cats, of course. I have to have cats!
