When we moved to Blue Ash 6 years ago from the country, one of the things we really missed about country life was the local small creamy whip. After doing some research, boy were we excited to discover a creamy whip treasure right down the road from our new house.
Don’s Creamy Whip is owned and run by Vonderhaar’s Catering and it’s located right behind the catering company on the corner of West Pleasant St. and Market St. Don’s Creamy Whip opens up each year late March or early April and closes down for the winter early in October.
They serve lots of things at Don’s – hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, fries and similar type things, but we go for the soft serve ice cream. It’s really good and it’s reasonable. I always expect what I spend for our family of four to be much higher than it is. You can get your cone dipped in various hard coatings, with sprinkles, two flavors mixed together or just straight up (how I prefer it). You can get creamy whip with candy mixed in. You can get sundae’s. You can get a root beer float. You can get a banana split. You get the picture and there’s lots more choices. Anything you want done with creamy whip they do it. They also have scoop ice cream and frozen yogurt – the flavors on the yogurt change on a regular basis. Last time I was there, the options for yogurt were banana or chocolate. (For the creamy whip, it’s always vanilla or chocolate.)
Don’s has some really nice picnic type tables set up right in front (just replaced this year and really nice) along with some umbrellas. There’s almost always a small line when we go, but it moves quickly. The staff has always been sweet and efficient. I let my kids order their own treats and it can sometimes involve numerous shouts of, “WAIT, I’ve changed my mind”. The old order is simply crossed out and a the new one written down.
Don’s is a refreshing step back in time. We sit, quietly licking our cones, talking about our day and relishing every single lick and moment. No worries here. Just yummy scrumptious creamy whip.
Be sure and stop by my personal blog, Little World After All.

So glad to hear about a new place to visit for soft serve. We’ll have to head there soon.

Yeah this reminded me I haven’t been in oh, 3 weeks. We can walk there and did last summer, but I think I’m too pregnant at this point to make it back up the hill post-ice cream eating 🙂 Our 2-year-old would love a big cone but I have seen too many toddlers drop the big ones on the ground or have them slide off 🙂 We usually end up giving her bites of whatever we have when she’s finished but at least she can handle the cone and not get *too* sticky or drop the ice cream everywhere.

I also love Don’s! Thanks for the tip on the baby cones Katie.
Karen, I just told Matt and Jami about their new creamy whip since they moved in right up the street. DANG… I will now have to stop there this weekend.

We love Don’s! Another secret that we discovered that is not on their menu is that they have baby cones for a quarter. These are teeny tiny cones with your choice of soft serve. They are perfect for our toddler especially to not give her a sugar high right before bed! I know some people get them for their dogs too!

Katie – that’s a wonderful secret and I’m so pleased you shared. My kids have always been big cone kids (just like their Mom!). :~)
