New Family Food Camps at Krohn

July 15, 2014 By Shannanb

Buying and eating organic food has become a popular trend in recent years. Of course, eating healthy is always in style and good for you and your family. But why go to the grocery store to purchase organic produce when you can grow it yourself? Not only will you save money, you can also get the kids involved in the meal preparation process!

Need help getting started? Head on over to the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park this August for Family Food Camps, presented as part of their 2014 Summer Floral Show, The Edible Landscape. This show features a landscape filled with summer annuals and edible plants and demonstrates how a carefully planned landscape design can create a residential garden that is both attractive and productive.

Family Food Camps will be offered on four Saturdays in August and will teach you how to grow and prepare healthy food choices for your family. You can choose to attend anywhere from one to four of the seminars, as each session has a different focus:

Presto! It’s Pesto
Saturday, August 2 • 10 am -12 pm
Join Krohn staff and Meghan Fronduti of Juice Plus and Tower Gardens to learn about aeroponics and how to grow beautiful edibles with very little space or effort. Learn about spiralizing veggies to make a healthy pasta-like base for your homemade pesto.

Green Magic! Spices and Herbs
Saturday, August 9 • 10am -12 pm
Join Krohn staff and The Spice & Tea Exchange to learn more about using herbs and spices to flavor your foods. Make your own special salsa and pot up a pepper plant to take home.

“There’s (Edible) Gold in those Hills”: Learn the secrets of harvesting and a variety of uses for preserved foods
August 16 • 10 am – 12 pm
Join Krohn staff and other experts to learn how to harvest and preserve your summer bounty.

Wild Foods and Flowers
August 23 • 10 am – 12 pm
Join Krohn staff and Mary Dudley from the Civic Garden Center to learn more about wild edibles and flowers. Design a salad with a rainbow of colors and many healthful benefits.

Each class is $8 per adult and $4 per child (ages 5-12). This fee includes Summer Show admission and a takeaway project. Preregistration is required, with the deadline being the Monday prior to the Saturday seminar you wish to attend.

Sounds like an excellent way to spend a Saturday afternoon with the family! And if you decide to visit The Edible Landscape on a day when one of the Family Food Camps is not being offered, be sure to use this coupon to save $1 off the price of admission for up to four people.

The Edible Landscape runs through August 24, 2014. For more information about the Summer Floral Show, call 513.421.5707 or visit www.cincinnatiparks.com/krohn.
