Turn Off TV Week–April 19-25

April 23, 2010 By FFCStaff

This week is Turn Off TV Week.  Have you heard about it?  I hadn’t.  That is, until my daughter came home from school last week proclaiming that she would NOT be watching TV this week.  At all!  Not even Dancing with the Stars (which is saying a lot!). After a little research on the subject and found this site.

Around our house we are going to try to keep the TV off.  I’m being very realistic about it.  I’m sure at some point the little ones may want to watch something, or the weather may keep us from being outside.  However, I wanted to share some ideas for things to do instead of watching TV.

Get outside:

This is what we plan on doing a lot of this week.  With sunshine and mild temperatures the outdoors is calling.  That may mean just going out into your yard or to a local park.  We are very lucky to have such wonderful parks in our area!  To check out what may be happening in your location visit Greatparks.org or Explore the Outdoors Ohio for ideas.

Read:

This week would be a wonderful week to go explore your local library!  Our region has some fabulous libraries and bookstores.  You may also just want to head to the bookshelf in your home and take a minute to rediscover an old favorite!

Start a Garden:

Garden’s can be planted almost anywhere!  Take a minute to explore the Extension office website in your county.  There you will find all sorts of information about starting a garden!

Family Games:

While my family is on the younger side, I can’t wait for them to gain better understanding of games.  Family Game Night is something I look forward to each week.  We have a blast with games like Memory, Chutes and Ladders and CandyLand!  So, dust off those board games and spend some quality time together!  You may be surprised at what you talk about!

If you can, try to Turn of the TV this week!  You never know what you may discover!
