Pigs are going to fly this weekend in Cincinnati,  Superheroes and Villains will take over the city, and amazing clay artists will WOW you with their creations!  Most importantly….did you know that this Saturday is also Star Wars Day?  May The 4th Be With You! (As a mother of boys I was required to add that to this post, it’s in my contract…they will revoke my ‘cool mom card’ if I don’t.)

As always there is SO much to do in our area for families…and we have all the details below!

Friday, May 3 is Founder’s Day at Frisch’s Big Boy!  Head out to your favorite Frisch’s location, dressed as Big Boy himself, and you will receive a FREE Big Boy sandwich!  If you dress up from head to toe in a homemade costume to look like Big Boy, you could receive an entire Big Boy Platter free.  Dress up in a partial costume (paper hat, pompadour and bib) and you can win the Big Boy sandwich.  Be creative and make your costume.  Get out the scissors, crayons, tape, sewing machine, whatever!  If you need help, check out a free printable costume here from Frisch’s.  Help Frisch’s celebrate Dave Frisch’s birthday in tasty style!

Go Dog Go!    Through May 19 2013    Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park   {Various Locations : See below}

“A Playhouse in the Park “”Off the Hill”” production at 25 regional community centers, see the website for locations ~ P.D. Eastman’s beloved children’s book comes to life on stage! Big dogs and little dogs, black dogs and white dogs and all dogs in between delve into life with gusto, creating a visual spectacle of movement and color for audience members of all ages. The dogs swim and play. They howl at the moon. They ride a Ferris wheel. They sing, dance and climb trees. It all culminates in the greatest Dog Party of them all in this rollicking, musical free-for-all.

Mayfest at Ludlow Elementary School   May 3,2013 5 pm – 11pm   {Ludlow Elementary 512 oak St Ludlow , Ky}

Courtesy of the Ludlow PTO~Fun, rides, silent auction, spaghetti dinner, and much more!!  Silent auction has 30+ items!  Event runs from 5-8pm in the school cafeteria.  Rides and games on the street.   Grill food all night. Come join the fun!!

Family Breakfast Bake Off     May 3, 7-8 p.m   {William E. Durr Branch of the Kenton County Public Library}

Does your family have a great breakfast recipe? Make and bring your favorite breakfast casserole to the Library for a Taste Off! Enter as a family or individually. Winners will be selected by popular vote. Recipes should be submitted to by 9 p.m. on May 1, 2013. Bring your dish to the Library by 6:30 p.m. on the day of the program
for judging from 7 to 8 p.m.

SOG Kids-COLOR: Orange    May 3 from 3:30 to 4:30   {Brazee Street Studio}

Join us to create one-of-a-kind sun catchers inspired by ORANGE. Create two sun catchers- one to take home, and one to submit to gallery One One for their 3rd Annual SOG Kids Gallery Show: Rainbow Project!




13th Annual Clay Alliance Spring Pottery Fair    May 4 11 AM to 5 PM    {DeSales Corner on ClayAllianceCollageWoodburn Avenue}

The 13th annual Clay Alliance Spring Pottery Fair will be held on Saturday, May 4th from 11am until 5pm at DeSales Corner on Woodburn Avenue.  Jake Speed and the Freddies will be playing from noon until three, so try to plan your visit during that time if you’d like to hear some great music!  The event is free to attend.  Spring Pottery Fair will also include a hands-on arts station where children can decorate ceramic mini-monsters or bowls for just $10 each. Proceeds from the children’s arts station will go to Empty Bowls, a grassroots effort to end hunger supported by the Clay Alliance. You can be a reading Superhero!  Grab your kids and make a day of’s Free Comic Book Day!  Encourage a love of reading and get some thrills as you pick up special edition comic books created specially to celebrate Free Comic Book Day around the world.  FFC’s Rodney Q. gives you all the details on this awesome day in his post here:  Go to and use their easy store locator to find a comic book shop near you who is anticipating.  You never know who you’ll run into!

Flying Piglet Kids’ Fun Run and Festival    Saturday May 4th 1:00pm    {Downtown Cincinnati}

Join the Flying Pig Marathon Kid’s Fun Run on Saturday May 4th with registration at 9:00am or register online. Races will begin with the Diaper Dash at 1:00 p.m. Participants will be allowed to have one parent on the “course.” Parents my walk or run along with younger entrants (5 and under). Children over 9 years of age are invited to participate in the Kids’ Marathon One Mile at 12:00 noon or the 5K Fun Run, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend   Saturday, May 4 12 PM and 2 PM {Lincoln Ridge Park}

KCP&R will present a one-day ‘introduction to the sport’ as part of the international World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend. It’s NOT a tournament and everyone is invited. Fun begins at noon. And again at 2:00 pm. (A rain date of Sunday, May 5 has been set ~ just in case!)

Want to learn how to play? Here is your chance! Free demonstrations of the many types of ‘throws’, including the Drive, the Approach, and the Putt. CTP Contests, Putting Contests, and even Mini Disc Contests. Learning sessions and contests will begin at noon and at 2:00 pm!

Entry fee is as low as $15 and includes a WBDGW t-shirt and special commemorative disc.

Lincoln Ridge Park is easy to find! The address is 420 Independence Station Rd., Independence. From I-75, take the Florence/Union exit. Go east to 2nd stop light (Industrial Road). Turn R. Go to 1303/Turkeyfoot Road. Turn R and go 1/2 mile to Independence Station Road (just past the Marathon Food Mart). Turn L and go 2 miles. The park will be on your L. Or, from I-275, take the Turkeyfoot Road exit and go south about 6 miles to Independence Station Road. Turn L and go 2 miles to the park.

Peanut  Butter & Jam Sessions presents: MUSIC  MAKING WITH MADCAP –   The  Story of Jack and the  Beanstalk     May 4, 10 AM and 11:30 AM    {Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church  6312 Kennedy Avenue, Cincinnati, OH}

Madcap Puppets, along with violin, cello and piano, tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk through the music of Schubert.  Warm, fuzzy, family fun!  Each concert lasts approximately 40 minutes.  Tickets are available at teh door or call 513-381-6868.  $5 individual (child or adult).  Children until 2 are FREE!

Pretty Little Pin Cushions      May 4  12 PM to 2 PM    {Broadhope Art Collective}

Using vintage glassware and needle felted wool you will create unique and whimsical pin cushions. They are perfect Mother’s Day or teacher appreciation gifts…or just make something fun for yourself, because let’s face it…you deserve it! This class is adaptable to both experienced and beginning needle felters, ages 12 and up. If you’d like to make more, extra bases will be available for purchase during class, for a small fee.

Use a variety of glass materials to create a hanging glass bird. Bring images of your favorite bird for inspiration, or use your imagination to design the wildest bird you can imagine!

Mom+Me: Picture Frame   May 4 from 3 PM to 4 PM   {Brazee Street Studio}

Just in time for Mother’s Day you can make glass art together! Bring your young artist to design a glass picture frame using a variety of fused glass components. The glass frame of your design will be mounted on a 5×7″ frame, ready to display.  $30 per picture frame.

Artworld   May 4 from 11 AM until 5 Pm   Cincinnati Art Museum

The Art Museum has an incredible collection of prints in its permanent collection. Explore the art of the print how they are made. Kids will have the opportunity to discover printing techniques like screenprinting, emboss, relief print, collagraph, and monotype.   Participants can create their own original print to take home and enjoy.  Free, good for all ages.

Get ready for summer with performances from Happen, Inc. and Allegro Music Ensemble, visits from local artists, a scavenger hunt, story time, a special art project in Artworld, and more!  Free, good for all ages.

Cincinnati Library Comic Con  May 5, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.  {Public Library of Cincinnati and comic book featureHamilton County}

Enjoy an afternoon filled with a comic book swap, booths, a comic book exhibit, a panel discussion with writers and illustrators, the Comic Con Drawing Contest award ceremony, the opportunity to take pictures with your favorite characters (Stormtroopers, X-Men and more), and free comic books in celebration of Free Comic Book Day.  This is a FREE event!

Let’s Break Glass! Learn basic skills of cutting glass, foil wrap, and simple welding iron. Come explore the art of stained glass with the artists from Sharp Art. You’ll have a great time, and have a gorgeous garden stake decoration to take home when you’re finished!  Ages 12 to adult.  $25.

Artists Reaching Classrooms Exhibit   Through May 16    {Taft Museum of Art and Public Library}

The Taft Museum of Art’s annual Artists Reaching Classrooms exhibition is on display through May 16 in the atrium of the Main Library. The exhibit showcases art, including painting, photography, digital design and ceramics, created by students from 12 area high schools. The Main Library is open 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
